Samantha Cristoforetti is doing something no other female from Italy has done before, exploring space.
Cristoforetti, captain and pilot in the Italian Air Force and astronaut with the European Space Agency, is Italy’s first female astronaut. And on November 23, she will be traveling to the International Space Station, where the second long-term mission by the Italian Space Agency is heading as part of the Futura project, according to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “There are representatives of all our partners. It’s a major international project and the tangible proof that when we have a shared goal we can do exceptional thing…” said Cristoforetti, who will be exploring the topic of nutrition during the mission. “Astronauts live for 6 months in an environment that is highly stressful for both the body and the mind. In space, certain imbalances that we all suffer here on earth-but over a longer timescale-set in more quickly,” she said. While on her mission, Cristoforetti will also be flying the “WeFly!” flag for pilots with disabilities.
