as shown in the image above shows the south entrance of the tunnel "Sappanico" the tunnel of the highway A14 Bologna-Taranto (near Ancona), which is in the process of modernization.
I had mentioned it in a previous article.
The barrel south (towards Taranto and Pescara, which is not seen in the picture) was built in variant while the northbound (toward Bologna) will expand the current barrel north.
In fact, the photos I took from the webcam of the site of the " Autostrade per l'Italia SPA "shows the barrel north (which you can see to the right of the viewer) that already has the new arch above.
The old south cane (which you can see to the left of the observer) will become a service tunnel, as the tunnel to escape (emergency) and ventilation.
The new tunnel can be taken as a model for modernization of other tunnels.
I remember the tunnel "Sappanico" is 862 meters long.
Now, for a tunnel so long and place in curve serving devices and security structures.
The tunnel is an emergency solution.
So, you can expand the tunnels without having to demolish infrastructure (except the old roof of the tunnel to expand) and putting a structure for more security.
Moreover, the work does not create major traffic problems.
Best regards.
