I invite you to read the article by Fausto Biloslavo on italian magazine "Panorama" which is titled "Turchia, crocevia del caos", (in english language "Turkey crossroad of chaos").
Turkey pays the fluctuating policy of his government.
Now, the country is secular institutions but Muslim majority and with a very rooted Islam.
In fact, you do not watch what happens in cities like Istanbul, formerly Constantinople, a city that is almost European.
The deepest is the Anatolian Turkey and is strongly Islamic.
Turkey today lives a contradiction between a secular government, and (at least verbally) democratic and Islamic culture that sees (as in any more orthodox Islam actually) the only reference in the Quran.
This contradiction could really explode.
Added to this is a government, that of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who first tolerated trafficking of Isis to Syria and then overturned alliances.
So from country secular and pro-Western, Turkey is today a deeply unstable country and poised between democracy and authoritarianism, between secularism and Islamism.
Erdogan and his party, the AKP, say they want to maintain secularism and then want to return to the mosque of the Byzantine church of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Ataturk building that would convert it into a museum in 1939.
This situation is really dangerous now and the signs are worrying.
The case of the explosion of a car bomb December 10, 2016 near Istanbul, next to the Besiktas stadium, and the attack that December 19, 2016 resulted in the death of the Russian ambassador in Ankara are just two examples of what is likely to happen.
