Canadian Pacific Railway, a railroad that made a nation

Dear friends,

for joy of my friend and partner Stephanie Caracciolo (who loves Canada and Vancouver) I talk about Canadian Pacific Railway.

As reported in the book of "Reader's Digest" which is entitled "The world of the incredible", the Canadian Pacific Railway was not only a huge railroad but also a work that helped create a nazione.Nel 1867, the Ontario areas , Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia assembled Canada.
Canada was threatened by the invasion of the United States from the south.
However, British Columbia (which was located on the Pacific coast) was isolated and the Saskatchewan and Alberta were part of the Northwest Territories.
To encourage British Columbia to join the federation of Canada, Parliament ensured that not only would build a great railroad, but he would do it in 10 years.
Six millionaires joined to form the Canadian Pacific Railway.
For 25 million dollars, the land required construction, tax exemptions for twenty years and other minor guarantees, they promised to carry out the work in the allotted time.
To oversee the work, he was called an expert on Chicago railways, Cornelius Van Horne.
He organized teams of workers who worked on the prairie, and made progress more quickly.
Then, he took 12,000 men and sent them with 5,000 horses in the most inaccessible areas, the icy expanses of Lake Superior, to build bridges and to blast the rocky obstacles with dynamite.
When dynamite stocks ended, Van Horne said implanting three factories to produce it.
Very soon, Van Horne began to understand that the costs exceeded 27 million dollars and the creditors began to be felt.
The request to the Parliament of a new allocation of 35 million dollars was ignored.
The plan seemed to fail.
However, an unexpected event will verify: Louis Riel, an anarchist half-breed unleashed a revolt in Saskatchewan.
On that occasion, Van Horne had it moved 4,000 soldiers on the railroad not yet completed in just 11 days.
Parliament granted the funding and avoiding four impassable mountain ranges, it was possible to go through the territories of the North West, was reached British Columbia and the construction of the Mount Macdonald Tunnel, the railroad came to the Pacific coast.
With teams of workers that proceeded from east and west, the work proceeded up to the meeting point.
November 7, 1885, the workers screwed the last bolt last sleeper.
At the station of terminus, Van Horne ran up the tracks to a location on Burrard Inlet, which he called Vancouver, in memory of Captain George Vancouver, who was the first explorer of the area.
A team of railroad carried a rudimentary post office in a town Alberta.
Around this nucleus was born the city of Calgary, with the cattle market.
The official opening of the railway took place June 28, 1886, when the Pacific Express accomplished the journey of over 4,600 km from Montreal to Vancouver.
This is an answer to all those here in Italy do not want infrastructures such as railways and highways.
Without infrastructure, people is not growing.
Best regards.
