Italian Canadians, a reality with which we are confronted

Dear friends,

you know that according to the census of 2006, about 1,445,335 Canadians of Italian origin?

Moreover, in Canada there are 137 045 Italian citizens.
Now, until 1880, Italians resident in Canada were few.
A 1881 census reported that Italians were only 1,849.
Perhaps, Italians emigrated to Canada may have been also be but many more of them may have changed their names and surnames and adopted uses Anglo-Saxon or French-Canadian (depending on location) to assimilate better among the people.
Only after the Italians began to be seen more in Canada.
The first real wave of immigration from Italy to Canada there was between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
The second wave was in the 50s and 60s of the last century.
These migrations were mainly from the north-east of Italy (Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia) and the south (Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria and Sicily).
The settlements were created in particular in Italian cities such as Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Hamilton, Niagara Falls and Ottawa.
In the 20s of last century, some Canadian laws limited the Italian immigration.
These laws were abolished in the 60s.
During World War II, Italians in Canada suffered discrimination, as German immigrants.
Even Italian-Canadians (with Canadian citizenship) had problems.
The arrivals in Canada resumed in a massive way in the 50s.
The arrivals were about 500,000 divided in about 20 years.
In the 70s, the emigration to Canada was reduced.
From 1991 to 2006 , Italians emigrated to Canada were only 7,000, more or less as many as the inhabitants of the municipality of Roncoferraro, my country, in the Province of Mantua.
With the crisis of 2008, resumed departures and Canada is one of the most sought after.
I can not blame the young unemployed who go away from Italy, being unemployed, too.
Today, the majority of Italian Canadians live in Ontario (about 867 980).
It also many living in Quebec (299 655).
Approximately 80% of them are Catholic, 9.0% profess the Protestant and almost 2% profess other Christian faiths (as Orthodox).
There are also Jews and atheists.
The average income of Italian Canadians is higher than the average income across Canada ($ 34.871 against $ 31.757) and also the registered unemployment rate in the community is lower (5.4%) than the national average (7.4%).
The Italian-Canadians have made known to Canadians also various Italian products, which here in Italy are neglected. as the famous Canestrato of Moliterno Cheese, a cheese of Basilicata.
Just think, 80% of the forms of this cheese ends in Northern America, United States of America and Canada.
Italian-Canadians are famous the singer Michael Bublé, the manager Sergio Marchionne, the ice hockey player Roberto Luongo, model Linda Evangelista, singer Gino Vannelli and chef Claudio Aprile.
The latter is the judge of " Masterchef Canada ".
It should be remembered also Nathan Cirillo, the Italian-Canadian soldier killed in the cowardly attack that there was in Ottawa in October 2014.
Italian-Canadians have contributed to the construction of monuments, such as the cathedral of Montreal.
Given all that, Italy can not deal with a country like Canada.
Kind regards.
