Australia, PM Tony Abbott: "Jobs, growth and opportunity"

Antonio Gabriele,

I’ve just delivered a major speech setting out the Government’s economic strategy as well as demonstrating how the coming Budget will be responsible, measured and fair.

The Budget in May will make it easier for Australians to work; easier for businesses to compete; and easier for families to raise their standard of living.

The centrepiece of the Budget will be help for families, as well as a tax cut and support for small businesses to create more jobs.

The Government is working to a plan that is building a stronger economy because that means more jobs and more prosperity for everyone.

We intend to build further on the economic progress we have made over the past 18 months:
More than 200,000 new jobs were created in 2014;
Housing approvals are up 14 per cent to near record levels; and
Retail sales have risen for nine consecutive months.

We have achieved this despite the economic headwinds from overseas.

We have more to do – and we are continuing to strengthen the economy, create the jobs of the future and set up Australia for continued long-term prosperity.
