This event was created to celebrate the spirit of international peace
and scientific cooperation that signified the signing of the Antarctic Treaty
in 1959.
Antarctica Day 2014 is an
international effort to disseminate knowledge about Antarctica.
The Association of Polar Early Career
Scientists is proud to help inspire a new generation of polar researchers. The
day is for everyone, so take some time to celebrate with our co-workers, family
and friends!
This year several events and classroom
activities are happening centered on Antarctic science and exploration. One of
the activities organized for Antarctica Day is related to the fact that
Antarctica does not have a flag; as it is not the propriety of any country, it
belongs to all mankind. So, the aim of this activity is to create a flag for
Antarctica, bearing in mind that, this is a place where nations work together,
sharing their own scientific investigations.
I am a English Language teacher and I
presented this activity to my students. They were really motivated to create
flags for Antarctica, and here you can see what they have done:
This Association has created a map where
you can see all the educative institutes which are working on this project, all
around the world! As you can see, there
are five institutes in Italy working on this subject; in five
different cities: Salerno, L’Aquila, Livorno, Pontedera and Prato. https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zULBJQdxnPco.kwvMEcBh4KTk
I do believe that we all should encourage
educators and their students from around the world to express their own
knowledge, curiosity and amazement about Antarctica in the form of Antarctica
Flags.
Happy
Antarctica Day 2014!!!
